Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser

The village of Scheffau - meaning leaning meadows - is situated at the foot of the majestic Wilden Kaiser mountains, in the valley of the same name running between Worgl and St. Johann in Tirol. The village is well known to winter skiers as the best starting point to the Skiwelt ski arena and is served in winter by two gondolas, making access to the mountains very quick indeed. In summer one gondola runs up into the mountain area which is dotted with lakes and walking paths as well as natural flora and fauna.

The village, with it's population of approximately 1,300 inhabitants, is in the middle of this beautiful valley opposite the Kitzbuheler Alps on one side and the less developed Wilden Kaiser range. Scheffau is the 1st Kneipp experience village in Tirol and was chosen for the International gathering of Kneipp clubs in 2009. Above the village lies the beautiful Hintersteinersee Lake and various walking paths lead to this truly lovely location as well as, in summer, a free mini-bus service for guests staying in Scheffau. Much of the surrounding area is still farmed so the landscape is a mixture of pasture and wood, where the pace of life keeps to the rhythm of nature.

Scheffau in summer offers lake swimming, pool swimming, various Kneipp stations including a bare foot way through the woods and a programme of Kneipp for everyone from the local tourist office, the regular village band concerts and the village evening get together as well as cycling, mountain biking, walking, climbing and just being able to watch the world go by from your favourite spot.Various walking/hiking paths and biking/cycling paths also start from the village and an international Cycle race is held from here in May/June of each year. Various other activities such as inner tubing, white water rafting, several golf courses, canyoning, climbing, horse riding, swimming (lake and pool) and sightseeing excursions are available within 10 to 90 minutes of the village. Scheffau lies approximately half-way between Innsbruck and Salzburg (approximately 60 minutes to each) and within 90 minutes of Munich. Local pools also offer sauna, massage, steam bath and various beauty treatments all year round.

In winter the emphasis is very much on skiing/snowboarding - Scheffau has two ski schools - winter walking, cross-country skiing and snow tubing, toboganning and romantic horse drawn carriage rides are all close by. The winter season lasts from the beginning of December until April, with the busiest times around New Year and February. The weekly candle lit walk is also a favourite with guests at this time of year.

Some things last all year, like a varied and high quality range of food and drink, cosy guesthouses or mountain huts, the ice cream/cake parlour in the woods and a beautiful place to rest and relax in the mountains amongst welcoming hosts and gorgeous scenery.
